Stress Hormones
- Cortisol hormones affect mood and improve memory and brain function. Our fight-or-flight hormone, norepinephrine, reacts to stressful situations by getting the body ready for the obstacle.
- During stressful situations, adrenaline (epinephrine) raises heart rate and blood flow to skeletal muscles while supplying energy and oxygen.
- Stressful situations raise levels of oxytocin, sometimes known as the “LOVE HORMONE,” which can help lower anxiety and keep us calm
Happiness Hormones
- Dopamine hormones are released during time of excitement and enjoyment
- Serotonin hormones sometimes called the “FEEL-GOOD HORMONE” helps regulate the mood and are released when one feels happy.
- Endorphins are released during exercises and other activities that produce physical sensations.
- Oxytocins are also released during physical intimacy and promote the feeling of trust and bonding.
As one can see, hormones are pivotal in our day-to-day life, and we can control our hormone level.
Knowing this, why not choose activities that promote happiness and good mental health, such as yoga, or a short or long walk in the park. By doing so you can help decrease the risk of stress that can lead to health problems such as heart disease, high blood pressure and stroke.
Life throws us many stressful events, do not consume 24 hours of the day trying to fix them all. I say deep breathe and let go of the things you cannot control. Tomorrow is a new day!
